Visiting electives for the class of 2024
May 1, 2022
At the AFMC Board meeting on April 24, 2022, the Board approved the recommendation from the AFMC Committee on Undergraduate Medical Education (UGME), with the support of the AFMC Committee on Student Affairs, that visiting electives, including international electives, will be allowed starting in the Fall of 2022, for the Class of 2024, according to each school’s capacity and schedule.

The CACMS has begun to revise the Standards and Elements of accreditation. This work started with the broad consultation that was undertaken in 2019-2020 and has been accelerated with the independence of the CACMS from the LCME.  The first round of revisions was approved by the CACMS in September 2022. These changes will be reflected for full accreditation visits in 2024-2025.  The revisions focused on areas that were felt to need immediate clarification.

Moving forward, the goal is to review 6 of 12 Standards and Elements (specifically, Standards 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and related Elements) by Fall of 2023 (for visits in 2025-2026) and the final 6 Standards and Elements by Fall of 2024 (for visits in 2026-2027). This will be the first iteration of a 2-year cycle of ongoing review.  The Standards and Elements for review have been prioritized based on common areas of concern seen across programs, the broad consultation, and ongoing input from community stakeholders.
