Since 2010, the Canadian population has increased by 12% while Canadian admissions to medical school has only increased by 6% during the same timeframe. Statistics Canada reported in 2019 that approximately 4.6 million Canadians did not have regular access to a primary care provider.

How can we, as clinicians, educators and researchers, change our practices to better support learner success? When we asked the ICAM Learner Experience Group, this is the question they wanted addressed. On Sunday, April 16, a dedicated Learner Forum will consider this topic and learner organizations from Canada and around the world will bring forward their suggestions.

Join us as we learn from representatives of the Black Medical Students’ Association of Canada (BMSAC), Canadian Federation of Medical Students (CFMS), Fédération Médicale Étudiante du Québec (FMEQ), International Federation of Medical Students Associations (IFMSA), Indigenous Medical Students’ Association of Canada (IMSAC), Resident Doctors of Canada (RDoC) and several other organizations. Dr. Geneviève Moineau, President and CEO of the AFMC, will moderate the session. A question-and-answer period will follow the presentations.

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the perspective of learners regarding their needs.
  • Engage with learners to better understand the learner lens.
  • Reflect on how to change practices to support learner success.
